Welkom op de site van de SEC-Nederland, een van de afdelingen van de Société Européenne de Culture .
De SEC is een podium voor denkers, schrijvers en kunstenaars, een Europees forum, met een rijk verleden.
De SEC-leden in Nederland komen maandelijks bijeen voor een voordracht van een SEC-lid of gastspreker, die zowel een informatief, essayistisch, persoonlijk of wetenschappelijk karakter kan dragen. Daarbij staat de discussie na afloop centraal, een discussie die eerder doet denken aan een intensief gesprek, waarin ervaringen, inzichten, visies en ideeën worden getoetst aan en gedeeld met een geïnformeerd publiek. Lid worden van de SEC betekent aldus participeren, de eigen expertise inbrengen en deze op de proef stellen. In dit proces heeft een ‘politique de la culture’ plaats en kunnen nieuwe inzichten ontstaan.
De SEC gaat terug tot de nadagen van de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Oprichter Umberto Campagnolo (1904-1976) wilde een Société Européenne de Culture oprichten in de ware zin van het woord. Een Société die in het splijtende Oost en West Europa haar eenheid zou hervinden door een “politique de la culture” en de “dialogue”. Umberto Campagnolo vond veel steun. bij mensen als o.a. Thomas Mann, Jean Paul Sartre, Henri Matisse, Arnold Toynbee of Isaiah Berlin (in Nederland onder meer bij Coen van Emde Boas, Jan Romein, Willem Sandberg, Arthur van Schendel, Victor van Vriesland en H. Th. Wijdeveld), die later ook bijna allemaal leden van de SEC werden.
In 1950 was de daadwerkelijke oprichting een feit. De SEC vestigde zich in Venetië en er ontstonden afdelingen in bijna alle Europese landen. Het hoofdkantoor was vanaf het begin gevestigd in Villa Hériot op het eiland Guidecca in Venetië. Binnenkort vind de verhuizing van het hoofdkantoor naar Pescia (Toscane) plaats. Het archief van de SEC bevind zich nu in een afdeling van de Historical Archives of the European Union in de prachtige Villa Salviati van het European University Institute te Florence (http://www.eui.eu/Research/HistoricalArchivesOfEU/News/2016/03-31-Archives-of-the-Societe-Europeenne-de-Culture-at-the-Historical-Archives-of-the-European-Union.aspx)
Momenteel bestaat de SEC uit 15 verschillende nationale afdelingen en zijn er daarnaast individuele leden in de USA, Israël en Mexico. De organisatiestructuren en verdere internationale links zijn hier te vinden. De huidige leden vertegenwoordigen diverse beroepen en achtergronden: kunsthistorici, schrijvers, filosofen, historici, rechters, advocaten en kunstenaars.
Laureaten van de SEC zijn tot nu toe de Tsjechische oud-president Václav Havel, de Duitse oud-bondspresident Richard von Weizsäcker en de Poolse oud-minister voor Buitenlandse Zaken Bronislaw Geremek geweest. Tegenwoordig buigt zich een internationale commissie over een nieuw voorstel. Erelid is de Italiaanse filosoof Norberto Bobbio (1909-2004).
Na de val van de Berlijnse Muur is het streven van de SEC om ook in de nieuwe Europese maatschappelijke omstandigheden vast te houden aan het ideaal van een “politique de la culture”, nu niet meer alleen tussen Oost en West zoals tot 1989 voornamelijk het geval was, maar ook door een dialoog tussen Noord- en Zuid-Europa. Ook de nieuwe rol van Europa in een sterk veranderende wereld wordt een belangrijk thema in de toekomst.
Regelmatig worden internationale conferenties georganiseerd, tot nu toe o.a. in Boekarest, Weimar/Jena, Moskou/Kazan, Pescia, Innsbruck en regelmatig in Venetië zelf. Voertalen zijn Frans, Engels, Italiaans en Duits. De laatste grote conferentie vond in 2012 plaats op Schloss Neuhardenberg bij Berlijn. Bijdragen worden in het viertalige tijdschrift van de SEC: Comprendre - Revue de Politique de la Culture gepubliceerd. Uitgever was Giuseppe Galasso (1929-2018), oud-president van de SEC en van de Biennale di Venezia. De laatse uitgave verscheen in 2012 met als titel: "Éthique globale – Dialogue des cultures et la perspective européenne". Vanaf medio 2017 zal ook een online toegang tot het tijdschrift beschikbaar zijn. Publicaties van de leden van SEC-Nederland zijn hier te vinden.
Daarnaast organiseert de SEC (tot nu toe meestal in samenwerking met de Sapienza Università di Roma) jaarlijks of tweejaarlijks een Internationale Summerschool in Venetië of Rome waar studenten uit alle Europese landen met het concept van de SEC rond een bepaald thema bekend worden gemaakt. De studie wordt gecertificeerd. Aan sommigen wordt een beurs verleend.
Sinds 2014 werd de reeds bestaande samenwerking met de Franse afdeling in Parijs (verder) geïntensiveerd.

Welcome to the site of SEC-Netherlands, one of the national sections of The Société Européenne de Culture.
The SEC offers a platform with a focus on Europe for writers, artists and philosophers and public intellectuals in general, which can boast of a rich past.
The SEC meets once a month to listen to a lecture by one of the members or an invited special guest that can be either informative, personal, essayistic or scientific. A discussion of the topics raised during the lecture then follows. The discussions often have the form of a conversation in which ideas, points of view and personal experiences are shared with a – well informed – general audience. Being a member of the SEC means to participate, to share your expertise and put it up for discussion. In this way a ‘politique de la culture’ may be formed.
The history of the SEC goes back to the days of just after the Second World War when its founder, Umberto Campagnolo (1904-1976), wanted to establish a S.E.C. in the true sense of these words. It was to be a Society in a divided and divisive Europe that would find a common ground through dialogue and a politics of culture. Campagnolo would find support for his ideas with people like Thomas Mann, Jean Paul Sartre, Henri Matisse, Arnold Toynbee and Isaiah Berlin. In the Netherlands he found support with people like Coen van Emde Boas, Jan Romein, Willem Sandberg, Arthur van Schendel, Victor van Vriesland and H.Th.Wijdeveld. They would all become members of the SEC.
The SEC was officially founded in 1950. Its head office was established in Venice (Italy) and in many European countries a national section would be set up. Froms its early beginnings SEC was housed in de Villa Heriot on the Venetian island of Giudecca; however it will be relocated to Pescia (Toscane), also in Italy. Its archives now rest at the Historical Archives of the European Union in the Villa Salviati of the European University Institute in Florence.
Today, the SEC has fifteen national sections and a number of individual members in the USA and Israel and Mexico. You can find the organisational structure and the international links Here. Current members come from a wide range of professions and have different backgrounds. Among them are historians, writers, philosophers, artists, art-historians, judges and barristers.
Occasionally, the SEC presents an award to a person of great European merit. Past laureates are former Cech president Václav Havel, former German president Richard von Weiszacker and former Polish foreign affairs minister Bronislaw Geremek. An international committee is considering a new proposal at this moment.
Honourable member of SEC is the Italian philosopher Norberto Bobbio (1909-2004).
After the collapse of the Berlin wall, the SEC remains devoted to the ideal of a politics of culture, but now no longer directed at the devide between East and West as before. Its focus lies with a dialogue between North and South Europe and in having a debate about the role of the various forms of Islam in Europe. Another important future topic will be Europe’s new role in a changing world.
At regular intervals an international conference is being organised – until now these were held in Bucharest, Weimar and Jena, Moscow and Kazan, Pescia, Innsbruck and several times in Venice. The last main conference was held in 2012 at Schloss Neuhardenberg in Berlin. Conference papers are published in the SEC’s magazine Comprendre – Revue de Politique de la Culture in four languages (Italian, English, French and German). Publisher of the magazine was the former SEC president and former president of the Venice Biennale Giuseppe Galasso (1929-2018). Its last issue was entitled ‘Ethique Globale – Dialogue des Cultures et la Perspective Europeenne’, published in 2012. In 2017 the magazine will be available online as well. The SEC also organises a annual or bi-annual international summerschool, unil now in cooperation with the Sapienza Universita di Roma. It takes place in Venice or Rome. Students from various European countries are brought into contact with the SEC principles by studying a particular topic. For these students it is an officially certified activity, and some are given grants to enable their participation.
Since 2014, contacts and cooperation with the French section in Paris have been strengthened further.
